Fifth guilty plead in Cherryville police scandal

A fifth person has pleaded guilty in a scandal that rocked the Cherryville Police Department.

John Ashley Hendricks, 47, pleaded guilty in federal court on Wednesday to conspiracy to transport or receive stolen goods, court officials said.

Last week, four of six Cherryville men charged with offering to provide protection to trucks carrying stolen goods and cash pleaded guilty.

Three of the four who pled guilty had ties to law enforcement, including the Cherryville Police Department.

Hendricks faces a maximum of five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

No date for sentencing has been scheduled.
