Man killed in tractor-trailer wreck in Union County

A Stanfield man died Wednesday morning after a tractor-trailer sped through a red light in a Union County intersection and hit his truck.

Larry Mitchell Smith, 73, was flown to Carolinas Medical Center-Main after the wreck but was pronounced dead at the hospital, N.C. Highway Patrol troopers said.

The crash happened around 8:40 a.m. when an 18-wheeler driven by Albert Grantham, a 70-year-old Wilmington resident, failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of NC 218 and NC 200. The tractor trailer struck a plumbing truck, driven by Smith, in the driver’s side door, First Sgt. M.R. Leach said.

Another passenger in the plumbing truck, 65-year-old Paul Griffin of Oakboro, was taken to CMC with non-life-threatening injuries. Grantham was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

The wreck is Union County’s first fatal crash of 2013, Leach said.
