Caldwell officials investigate house fire

GAMEWELL -- Caldwell County fire officials are investigating a blaze that heavily damaged a house Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say the fire was reported about 3:30 p.m. at a residence in the 2500 block of Chinaberry Lane. That is off Crump Road, in the Gamewell community.

The homeowner was in the residence when the blaze started, and he told officials the fire started in the basement, near a wood stove.

Caldwell fire officials estimated the damage at $120,000, but they say the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. Crews from the Gamewell, Collettsville, Hudson, Lenoir, North Catawba and Valmead fire departments battled the blaze.
