The winner: To minimize exposure to germs, especially during flu season: 1) Pull out your own pen when asked for a signature at a store and 2) when pumping gas, put your hand in the plastic sleeve the Observer comes in. Hilda Ryan, Wingate.

Use cloth instead of paper

Regarding the tip for using toilet paper for blotting makeup, etc., I have an even better idea: I bought a cheap pack of wash cloths that I don’t care are stained, and I use them. I wash them every time I do bath towels, so I’m not wasting any paper, and I’m not wasting water, since I do bathroom towels anyway. Bonny Salmeri, Charlotte.
