Metrolina Regional Scholars Academy: More than 125 students in grades four through nine will present original topics from a range of scientific fields at the school’s 2013 Science Fair on Jan. 15.Charlotte-area faculty and representatives will judge the projects, which are based on valid scientific research and use student-written computer programs to solve practical problems. Using the FBI’s “Safe Online Surfing Internet Challenge” program, which uses games and videos in specific sections for students in grades three through eight, teachers will be able to help students learn safe online habits. Union Academy Middle: Union Academy’s Middle School Mock Trial Team took first place against two schools at the trial competition at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Troy, N.C. UCPS: At the recent civics competition at Wingate University, teams from Central Academy of Technology and Arts, Forest Hills High and Marvin Ridge Middle testified as constitutional experts at simulated congressional hearings.Judges scored the teams using follow-up questions to assess knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles. The program promotes proficiency in civics. • Yesenia Garcia Ayala won the first UCPS Winter Photo Contest, out of 48 photos submitted.The photo will be used as a snow-day banner on the UCPS and all district schools websites.Cabarrus Cannon School: Cannon offers “Walk-in Wednesdays,” an alternative to its open houses, to accommodate different schedules. Cox Mill High: The National Honor Society hosted and collected 90 units of blood at a December community blood drive. The drive was dedicated to the shooting victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last month. Hickory Ridge High: Band students Caleb Carpenter, Greg Larson, Jonathan Thompson, Sarah Schauber and Megan Coyle were selected from auditions of North Carolina and South Carolina students for participation in the UNC Charlotte honor band: the Charlotte Youth Wind Ensemble. The first performance will be Feb. 26 at UNC Charlotte at 7:30 p.m. Hickory Ridge High: Michelle Cline and Penny Whitley were voted Team Members of the Month for December by the faculty. Cline is the assistant principal of instruction; Whitley is the YES Center assistant and substitute coordinator. Jay M. Robinson High: In the December DECA Regional Competition of 150 participants, these students won awards: Tom Cox, second place, Retail Merchandising.
