Charlotte barbecuer in TV showdown

Charlotte’s Zach Goodyear is one of three barbecue cooks representing North Carolina in Sunday night’s episode of the show “BBQ Pitmasters.”

The episode, filmed in October at Charlotte’s BBQ & Blues Festival, puts Goodyear up against Sam Jones of the legendary Skylight Inn in Ayden and Debbie Holt from Clyde Coopers BBQ in Raleigh. The program airs on Destination America, an offshoot of TLC and the Discovery network.

The episode airs at 9 p.m. and there are reports that Triple C Brewing Co., 2900 Griffith St., will open Sunday night for a viewing party featuring Lexington-style barbecue and smoked turkey made by Goodyear.

When the show was filmed, Goodyear was a partner in Sauceman’s Barbecue, but he since has left and is making plans to open a new restaurant. Goodyear also worked with chef Mark Hibbs at Ratcliffe on the Green before that restaurant closed in 2011.

This season’s episodes of “BBQ Pitmasters” sets up competitions between three pitmasters from different regions. There are plans to make a champions episode with the winners of the episodes on North Carolina, Texas, Kansas City, Memphis, Georgia and Kentucky.
