Long View man, 71, hospitalized after home fire

A 71-year-old man was taken to a Winston-Salem hospital after a fire Saturday at a home in Long View.

Firefighters were sent to the 3000 block of First Avenue Place SW around 10 a.m.. On the way to the scene, crews learned that a person was possibly trapped inside of the home.

Long View Fire Chief Eric Shepherd said there was still heavy fire and smoke in the home when firefighters arrived. Authorities found the victim still inside.

Shepherd said the victim – whose name has not been released by authorities – had initially escaped the fire, but had reentered the residence for reasons that are not clear. Others inside the home were able to get out of the home

Shepherd said the victim was still breathing and had a pulse when he was pulled from the home.

Paramedics planned to take him to Frye Regional Medical for treatment but Shepherd said he had been told the victim was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. An updated condition was not immediately available.

In the meantime, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
