Thousands of families are expected to apply for seats in Charlotte-Mecklenburg magnet schools in the coming month.

CMS has nine themes in 37 schools and is taking online applications through Feb. 11. When there are more applications than seats available, students are chosen by lottery.

Montessori, foreign language, International Baccalaureate and math/science programs are often among the most popular.

Morehead STEM Academy, a K-8 magnet that specializes in science, technology, engineering and math, had more than 600 on the waiting list after last year’s lottery.

Many private and charter schools in the area are also taking applications for 2013-14.
