The Mecklenburg County parks and recreation department will meet Jan. 16 to discuss building a playground to honor the victims of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting.
Officials will decide which park they want to build the playground, Mecklenburg County spokesman Leo Caplanides said.
The public meeting, which will be from 2 to 3 p.m. on Jan. 16 at Mahlon Adams Pavilion at Freedom Park, 1900 E. Blvd.
“This is of interest to a lot of people simply because of what this playground is being built for,” Caplanides said. “We wanted to do something to help honor those 26 individuals who lost their lives.”
He added that the department is not expected to start building the playground until the spring.
