Alex Barakat first spotted Julie Collins across a bar in Charlotte. Alex didn’t usually pick up girls at bars, but he knew that he had to talk to Julie. “He asked me if I liked his shoes,” Julie laughs. “I thought he was really funny.” From that night on, Alex, who lived in Washington, D.C., at the time, kept in touch with Julie with regular visits to Charlotte. “I said I didn’t want to date him because of the distance,” says Julie. “But each time Alex left, he asked if I was going to miss him. After six months I finally said yes.”

Julie says that when she travels, she still gets butterflies, “Whenever I was in an airport, it meant I was on my way to see Alex.” For dates, Alex met Julie in cities across the country, greeting her at terminals and baggage claims with a single-stem rose. Alex adds, “We’ve probably spent more time in airports than most people.”

Julie and Alex continued their adventure in a wedding dress and tuxedo, but this time, embracing their Charlotte home base; on the way to their uptown wedding reception, Julie and Alex walked with the bridal party through Taste of Charlotte. “There was jazz and everyone was dancing. Beautiful as always, Julie was a celebrity and people kept coming up to congratulate us,” says Alex. “Everyone says the first year of marriage is hard, but we have had so much fun. We still travel and do the things we love—I love that I get to do it with Julie.”
