Mecklenburg

North Mecklenburg High: The North Meck Debate & Speech team placed sixth overall in the Laird Lewis/Myers Park tournament. The head coach is Christopher Rocca.

Colleen Watson placed third in Original Oratory and second in Impromptu Speaking. Taylor Barrett went to the quarterfinals, Original Oratory and Impromptu Speaking. Alex Pope went to quarterfinals, Impromptu Speaking. Emily Yue placed fifth in Oral Interpretation.

Jack Watson, went to the semifinals, Oratorial Declamation. Thomas Thornton made it to the octofinals, Lincoln-Douglas debate. Nick Macri and Eric Thorsheim went to the quarter finals in Public Forum Team – quarterfinals. Raniah Jeanlys, Kavasia Heath, Kailyn Price made it to the final round, Student Congress.

Raniah Jeanlys was seventh overall, Student Congress. Colleen Watson was fourth, Mustang Award.

Davidson College: The Davidson Community Players and Davidson College Department of Theatre will perform “Jack and the Beanstalk” Jan. 24-27 on campus at the Barber Theatre. For details and to purchase tickets visit www.davidsoncommunityplayers.org or call 704-892-7953.

Charlotte Christian: 2011 alum Matthias Farley played for the University of Notre Dame in the BCS National Championship game as a starting safety.

Senior Buildup: Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to raise money and build houses in CMS school zones. Online donations may be made for individual schools at www.seniorbuildup.org.

Mallard Creek High: Seniors William Henriques and Morgan Zemaitis have been named UNC-Chapel Hill Morehead-Cain Scholarship semi-finalists and will advance to the next stage of the scholarship process.

Cabarrus

Cannon School: The school will host a program about middle school development on Jan. 22 at 11:30am on campus. Rising fifth to eighth graders and their parents are invited for a lunch and informational meeting. Preregistration at www.cannonschool.org/openhouse.

Covenant Classical School: The school will hold an open house for students K4-12 on Feb. 9 at 10 a.m., March 5 at 7 p.m. and April 18 at 9:30 a.m.. Details at www.covenantclassical.org.

Cox Mill High: Students have supported the community in several service projects. The Wrestling Team volunteered at the W.G. Hefner Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salisbury, visiting patients and playing games. Sophomore Michael Walker organized a fundraiser and raised the $500 needed to send a Harris Road Middle student on a school trip to Washington, D.C. The National Honor Society collected 90 units of blood at a blood drive.

Mt. Pleasant Elementary: Darryl Mallanda’s students created a mural to celebrate the school’s 40th anniversary.

On display in the school cafeteria, the mural features the name or monogram of each student and staff member.

R. Brown McAllister Elementary: Members of the school’s McAllister Muscles Club have worked out and gotten fit with the UNC-Charlotte’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee members.

The UNCC student athletes demonstrated and led 20-minute fitness stations for the club. The Muscles Club adviser is school counselor Jenny Byrd.

York

Clover High: Chad Smith has been hired as the new football coach.

Smith comes from Easley High. He was named the 2011 Upper State AAAA Coach of the Year.

Clover: During School Board Recognition Month in January, the district will recognize and honor Clover School District Board Members by donating library books at each of the schools’ media center. Board members are Mack McCarter, chairman; Melanie Wilson, vice-chair; Franklin Pendleton, Sherri Ciurlik, Joe Gordon, Barbara Parrish, and Liz Johnson.

• The following seven Clover School District teachers have met all requirements to become National Board Certified:

Amy Rossett, fifth-grade language arts and social studies teacher at Crowders Creek Elementary School.

Charlene Ruse, eighth-grade science teacher at Oakridge Middle School.

Jeff Rolf, sixth-grade science teacher at Oakridge Middle School.

Kristin Dover, kindergarten teacher at Larne Elementary School.

Ramie Macioce, social studies teacher at Clover High School.

Rhonda Welborn, fifth-grade language arts and social studies teacher at Crowders Creek Elementary School.

Sara Howard, third-grade math and science teacher at Larne Elementary School

Rock Hill: The District will hold an informational meeting for community members at 6 p.m. on Jan. 22 in the District Office Training Room, 660 N. Anderson Road and will provide the latest information about district plans for one-on-one technology in Rock Hill Schools.

Union

Marvin Ridge High: The Women’s Ensemble will perform at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art on Jan. 20 at 4 and 7 p.m.

As part of “Art To Poetry To Music,” the group will sing traditional Chinese folk songs in Chinese and Mendelssohn’s Herbslied in German. Details are available at the Bechtler Museum website and the Confucius Institute website.

Shiloh Elementary: The school recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the building and school site.

Originally on Old Monroe Road, the school has existed since 1917. The school plans a 100th anniversary celebration in 2017.

Rea View Elementary: The Student Council, PTA Service Committee and a local Daisy Scout Troop have organized and participated in several community service projects.

In a recent coat drive over 300 coats were collected and distributed to Union County residents. The groups also raised over $900 for the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy victims and worked with the Monroe Kiwanis Club in a food drive. Teachers James Reese and Kathy Baker sponsor the Student Council.

Weddington Elementary: The school recently held Global Week to celebrate customs and lifestyles of Thailand, Greece, Norway and India.

The event featured clogging and Taekwondo demonstrations, native attire and dance performances by Greek and Indian dancers.
