Teen is building homes in Vietnam

Tyler Buchanan, 19, of Huntersville left Dec. 31 on an International Service Trip to Vietnam to build houses for two Vietnamese families.

Tyler, a sophomore at Wake Forest University, went with a group from the school and was to return in mid-January.

“Vietnamese homes are one-room homes with a dirt floor and thatch roof and walls,” said his mother, Kim Buchanan. “That's what we were told about what to expect.”

She said she's heard from her son only a couple of times because of the long workdays. Tyler is a 2011 graduate of Hopewell High and an Angels of '97 $2,500 scholarship winner. An Eagle Scout, he did his project working at the Angels and Sparrows soup kitchen in Huntersville.
