Great Falls head coach John Smith reacts to a call during a game.

Neither numbers nor state championships have ever meant much to Great Falls basketball coach John Smith.

He would rather talk about his players and had to be coaxed several years go into reporting the number of games he’s won in his 44-year coaching career, all at Great Falls.

But there is no overlooking the milestone he can hit Tuesday night with a home win over region foe McBee.

A win would give him 900 career victories and make him by far the winningest coach in state history.

He’s lost only 236 games.

Smith’s teams have won 10 state championships in 17 tries.

Tonight’s boys’ game will start at 8, after the girls’ game at 6:30 p.m.
