Cam Newton has returned to Auburn University - not as a football player, but as a student, according to a report from WSFA-TV.

The station, based in Montgomery, Ala., reports that Newton has returned to Auburn to finish his degree. Newton's arrival was announced in a tweet by Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn.

The station quoted Kirk Sampson with the Auburn athletic department as saying Newton is pursuing a degree in sociology.
