North Carolina brewery delivers tasty coffee stout

Aces & Ates, Big Boss Brewing, Raleigh

About $5 for a 12 oz. bottle

We thought the coffee/beer thing had waned, but several breweries have trotted out new batches this winter, including some for the first time.

They range from the decent (Thunderstruck Coffee Porter from Asheville’s Highland Brewing) to fun and funky (Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout from Terrapin).

Our favorite: Aces & Ates, a smooth and slightly sweet stout with a delicate malt backbone, artfully blended with coffee from Raleigh’s Larry’s Beans. A nicely balanced beer that’s full-flavored with no sharp edges. It’s pricey – and it’s sold in single 12-ounce bottles. Well worth trying one. Peter St. Onge
