Steve Lytttle:
A strong winter storm is approaching the Charlotte region, and we could be seeing snow for the first time since early 2010. Brad Panovich of WCNC and I will try to answer your questions about what to expect tonight and tomorrow.

What odds do you both give CMS being either closed or on an altered schedule Friday?
Thursday January 17, 2013 12:01 Bill
12:02
Brad Panovich:
this system is bringing it's own cold air so until it starts coming down the temps won't be falling much.
Thursday January 17, 2013 12:02 Brad Panovich
12:03
Brad Panovich:
this is a really tough system because I am very confident that snow will fall from the sky, question is how much will stick due to warm ground and surface temperatures.

How will the accumulation vary across the piedmont? Is the more north or west your county is the more snow you will see?

Steve Lytttle:
(to Bill): My daughter-in-law teaches at CMS, and I told her I'd say a 30% chance of school being canceled.
Thursday January 17, 2013 12:03 Steve Lytttle

Brad Panovich:
Joey tough because bands of heavy snow will set up with heavier amounts, might be a now-cast type of thing.

Where is the rain/snow cutoff line tonight in terms of Charlotte/South Carolina...? Is the storm still moving at the speed anticipated or has it slowed down or sped up?

Thursday January 17, 2013 12:09 Jason
12:10
Steve Lytttle:
(to Fred) From what the Weather Service told me, this system seems to be about on schedule. As Brad noted, the exact location of snow will really depend on where the heaviest precipitation sets up.

I sometimes think these winter storm warnings are an evil plot by Harris Teeter to sell surplus milk and bread. Is this the real deal?
Thursday January 17, 2013 12:11 Tom
12:12
Steve Lytttle:
(to M.B., about the Boone trip) DOT is fully prepared, but we're talking about a lot of snow in the higher elevations. There'll be sun tomorrow to help clear the roads. I wouldn't go after dark, though, because re-freezing (black ice) could be an issue.
Thursday January 17, 2013 12:12 Steve Lytttle

(to Tom, about the warnings) Everyone always singles out Harris Teeter. I wonder why? All I can tell you is that it's snowing in Miss, Ala and Tenn. Something is coming.

Steve Lytttle:
(to Blake) Andrew Kimball of the local Weather Service office said a while ago that it appears as if someone along the I-85 corridor in NC will get heavy snow later this evening. As Brad noted, it's a now-cast thing -- we almost have to wait until it's closer.

(about the bridges) DOT unfortunately can't put down brine in advance, because heavy rain will wash it away. They plan to plow and salt as needed, but they won't be able to do much until (and if) snow accumulates.

Steve Lytttle:
To follow up on Brad's comment on thundersnow. We've had that twice in recent years (February 2004 and March 2009). Both times, some incredible heavy snow fell in localized areas.
Thursday January 17, 2013 12:22 Steve Lytttle
12:23
Brad Panovich:
KH it's not so much about the temperatures at the ground but the temperatures just above our head. It can snow at 35-40° if it cold just a few 1,000' up.

For the commute tomorrow, is there potential of a problem with all the rain we are receiving freezing overnight?
Thursday January 17, 2013 12:24 John
12:24
Brad Panovich:
While the roads certainly will get sloppy, I think my main concern would be the weight of heavy wet snow on the trees and power lines.

[Comment From RickRick: ]
Hi guys, any updates to the forcast since this morning as there is usually an update from the large weather services around noonish. Was thinking since Charlotte is usually on that hard to predice snow / rain line, have there been any change to the expected accumulation in north Meck county?

Thursday January 17, 2013 12:26 Larry

(to John) Of course, black ice forming around sunrise is particularly bad, because road crews are out there at the same time as people are going to work and school.

Shelley, depends on track we need to watch the radar as it approaches. Can't really give precise totals by town due to melting and heavier bands in some spots and not others. Like rain it never rains the same at every location.

[Comment From JamesJames: ]
What do you expect road conditions to be like in the morning? Is ice going to be a concern?
Thursday January 17, 2013 12:38 James
12:39
Steve Lytttle:
James, roads could be a problem even if snow doesn't accumulate. the rain and melting snow will leave streets wet. temps are the issue. if it clears, temps easily could fall below freezing. black ice could form even where there's no snow on ground.
Thursday January 17, 2013 12:39 Steve Lytttle
12:39
Brad Panovich:
it will be icy in spots in the morning due to snow on the roads, but the ground is 50° so I would expect most roads to be slushy. Bridges and overpasses could get icy.

12:40

Brad Panovich:

Thursday January 17, 2013 12:42 Guest
12:42
Steve Lytttle:
J, the "ice" might have been in my story, because the Weather Service mentioned it as a possibility near the end. but they were talking about really light levels. Brad's the scientist, and I'll defer to him on that. I didn't get the idea it was a big deal, though.
Thursday January 17, 2013 12:42 Steve Lytttle

(to Mrs Wilson's class) Glad to see you making good use of technology. It'll be good snow for snowmen, but my understanding is it'll really depend on whether you're lucky (or unlucky) enough to be in a spot where a heavy snow band sets up.
Thursday January 17, 2013 12:45 Steve Lytttle
12:45

Why is the snow cutoff seemingly always I85 in mecklenburg? Also, what are the chances the changeover takes longer than anticipated. I'm thinking 100%

Folks, we'll take a couple of more questions and then we'll have to bring the chat to a close. Steve and Brad, can you give us your final predictions/last-minute info?

Montague, if any of the Boyette girls are in your class, say hello for me. they're neighbors. Brad might dive into it, but my semi-scientific response is thundersnow is basically a thunderstorm that drops snow instead of rain. thunderstorms are a lot rarer in winter, but in intense systems, they can develop.

Brad Panovich:
Thunderstorms form when the temperatures from the ground to about 10,000' have a differences of say 30°-60°. In the summer it could be 80° at the ground and 30° at 10,000' In the in the winter some times the air is so cold aloft -40° that 30° at the surfacec can bring thundersnow.

Mon, I don't think outages will be a big problem here in the Piedmont. They are more likely where the heaviest snow falls (mtns.), because the heavy wet snow could bring down tree limbs
