Storm-related traffic death in Burke

VALDESE -- A motorist was killed when his disabled car was struck by a tractor-trailer on icy Interstate 40 early Friday, the N.C. Highway Patrol says.

The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. on eastbound I-40 near Albees Grove Church Road. That is near mile marker 111, not far from Valdese.

Troopers say the car’s driver, whose name has not been released, apparently lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the bridge in the middle of the road. Snow had fallen a short time earlier, and troopers say the road had icy and slushy spots.

A short time after that crash, a tractor-trailer then slammed into the car. The car driver died at the scene. The truck driver was not seriously hurt.

The wreck closed eastbound I-40 for several hours during the night.
