Where did it snow? How are roads?

Here is a county-by-county look at snowfall totals (from the National Weather Service), road conditions, and closings:

ALEXANDER ...

Schools: closed.

Snowfall: 1/2 to 1 inch.

Roads: good. Icy patches expected to form Friday night.

Closings: Employment Security Commission opened 10 a.m.

ALLEGHANY ...

Schools: closed.

Snowfall: 7.5 inches in Sparta; 8 inches in Glade Valley.

Roads: main roads wet; secondary road snow-covered. Significant icing expected Friday night.

Closings: county government.

ANSON ...

Schools: open.

Snowfall: up to 1/2 inch in northern part of county.

Roads: good shape.

ASHE ...

Schools: closed.

Snowfall: 14 inches in Creston; 10 inches in Glendale Springs; 2-3 inches in West Jefferson.

Roads: state roads wet with some slushy spots; secondary roads icy. Significant icing expected Friday night.

AVERY ...

Schools: public schools and Lees-McRae College closed.

Snowfall: 7 inches in Newland; 2 inches at Beech Mountain.

Roads: main roads wet with slushy spots; secondary roads slushy and ice-covered. Significant icing expected Friday night.

BURKE ...

Schools: public schools and Western Piedmont Community College opened three hours late.

Snowfall: 2 inches at Jonas Ridge; 1 inch at Valdese; trace in Morganton.

Roads: I-40 dry to wet; U.S. routes wet; secondary roads wet, with icy spots above 3,000 feet. Icing expected Friday night.

CABARRUS ...

Schools: Cabarrus County and Kannapolis City schools closed; First Assembly Christian closed; Covenant Classical School opened late.

Snowfall: trace to 1 inch.

Roads: mostly dry.

Closings: Senior Center; Meals on Wheels; Cabarrus County Transportation Service (except life-sustaining services).

CALDWELL ...

Schools: public schools closed; Caldwell Community College opened at 10 a.m.

Snowfall: 2 inches in Lenoir; trace in Granite Falls; higher amounts in northwest.

Roads: mostly wet. Significant icing expected Friday night in north and northwest parts of county.

CATAWBA ...

Schools: all three public school systems closed; Caldwell Community College and Hickory Christian opened at 10 a.m.

Snowfall: about 1/2 inch in most places.

Roads: mostly wet.

CLEVELAND ...

Schools: public schools opened 11 a.m.

Snowfall: little to none.

Roads: wet. Some icy patches expected Friday night.

DAVIE ...

Schools: closed.

Snowfall: 1/2 inch to 1 inch (heavier amounts in eastern part of county).

Roads: wet, with some icy patches near Forsyth County.

GASTON ...

Schools: public schools opened 10 a.m.

Snowfall: little to none south of I-85; about 1 inch in Dallas and Cherryville.

Roads: dry to wet. Icy patches expected Friday night in areas with water runoff.

Closings: Stowe Botanical Gardens opened 11:45 a.m.; Head Start began 10 a.m.

IREDELL ...

Schools: opened two hours late.

Snowfall: trace to half-inch. Some reports of 1 inch near Mooresville during height of snowfall.

Roads: good shape.

Closings: county government and courts opened 10 a.m.

LINCOLN ...

Schools: Lincoln Charter opened 10 a.m. (public schools were on teacher workday).

Snowfall: trace.

Roads: good shape.

Closings: county government and courts opened 10 a.m.

McDOWELL ...

Schools: opened 10 a.m.

Snowfall: trace at lower elevations; up to 3 inches in higher elevations.

Roads: mostly wet. Icy patches expected to develop Friday night.

MECKLENBURG ...

Schools: open.

Snowfall: trace to half-inch.

Roads: good shape. Some icy patches expected Friday night.

MONTGOMERY ...

Schools: opened two hours late; Montgomery Community College opened 10 a.m.

Snowfall: 1 inch reported in northern part of county; lesser amounts elsewhere.

Roads: good shape.

Closings: county government opened 10 a.m.

RICHMOND ...

Schools: open.

Snowfall: none.

Roads: good shape.

ROWAN ...

Schools: public schools closed; Catawba and Livingstone colleges opened 10 a.m.; Sacred Heart Catholic School closed.

Snowfall: 1 inch near China Grove; up to 2 inches in eastern part of county.

Roads: wet. Icy patches expected to develop Friday night.

Closings: Meals on Wheels; Rowan Transit System.

RUTHERFORD ...

Schools: closed.

Snowfall: trace.

Roads: good shape.

STANLY ...

Schools: open; Pfeiffer College opened 10 a.m.

Snowfall: trace to half-inch.

Roads: good shape.

UNION ...

Schools: open.

Snowfall: trace to half-inch (western part of county).

Roads: good shape.

WILKES ...

Schools: Wilkes Community College closed.

Snowfall: 3 inches in Wilkesboro.

Roads: wet to slushy; secondary roads ice-covered. Significant icing expected Friday night.

WATAUGA ...

Schools: public schools and Caldwell Community College-Watauga closed; Appalachian State University opened 10 a.m.

Snowfall: 3.5 inches in Boone; amounts of up to 9 inches at higher elevations.

Roads: U.S. 321 and other main roads wet with some slushy spots; secondary roads icy and snow-covered. Significant icing expected Friday night.

Closings: Meals on Wheels; library opened 11 a.m.

SOUTH CAROLINA...

Little or no snow was reported in Observer-area South Carolina counties.
