The newly-elected sheriff of Chester County says someone poisoned his dog earlier this week. The dog later died.

Sheriff Alex Underwood wrote about the incident in a post on Facebook.

“For those of you who have threatened me and my family, hide behind Facebook and have now taken action to poison our dog, AJ,” Underwood wrote online, according to WCNC-TV, the Observer’s news partner.

Underwood was elected sheriff in November, and is the first African-American sheriff in the county.

“This is a criminal act and you are low life and scum,” Underwood wrote in his Facebook post. “Do what you have to do and say what you have to say, but be man enough to say and do it to me.”

At least one commenter on the post indicated AJ was one class away from becoming a sheriff’s companion.

Calls to the Chester County Sheriff’s Department were not immediately returned.
