RALEIGH More than 70 health care and community groups want Gov. Pat McCrory to expand Medicaid to cover 500,000 additional uninsured people, saying it’s a good deal for North Carolina.
The groups released a letter Tuesday to the new Republican governor asking him to carry out the expansion from the federal Affordable Care Act. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states can decline to participate.
The groups point out the coverage would be paid fully by the federal government at first before the state’s share reaches 10 percent. Some Republican state lawmakers are worried about the state’s cost, which one report previously totaled at $830 million through 2019.
McCrory has said he’s looking at the issue.
Letter signees include the North Carolina Pediatric Society, Duke University Health System and the state AFL-CIO.
