Mecklenburg

Montclaire Elementary: Fifth-grader Anuhar Cerna is one of 12 national finalists in the Scotties Facial Tissue video contest, “Trees Rock.” In his video, Anuhar focused on the benefits of using trees in a proposed school project for an outdoor cafeteria/learning area. The winner will be determined by online voting through Feb. 15 at www.scottiestreesrock.com.

Davidson Elementary: Denise Addison’s kindergarteners and first-graders have been learning about giving. During the current school year, the class held a food drive for the Ada Jenkins Center and made greeting cards and sang songs for the residents of The Pines at Davidson retirement community.

CMS Magnet lottery: The deadline for the CMS magnet student-assignment lottery for 2013-2014 is Feb. 11 at 10 p.m.

Families with students in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools must apply online for the magnet programs. Free computer access is available at the Smith Family Center and at all zone offices from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Contact CMS representatives at 980-343-5335 for more information.

West Charlotte High: The school will host open houses for the IB program on these dates: 8 a.m. Jan. 28; 6:30 p.m. Jan. 31; Feb. 5, 8 a.m. Feb. 5; 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7. Contact Monica Martin for additional information at 980-343-6060.

Independence High: Shakira Warren was recognized as the third-place winner in the 19th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Arts and Writing Contest. Breanna Richardson was recognized as the CMS District Honorable Mention.

Harding University High: Shannon Monroe’s Entrepreneurial students have completed and received certificates from a seven-week Junior Achievement of Charlotte program.

Union

Western Union Elementary: At an awards ceremony hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Monroe and Western Union Elementary School, students were honored as Terrific Kids for their enthusiasm.

The Terrific Kids honored were Trinity Conrad, Collin Burk, Nate Upchurch, Jaden Kempf, Bethany Fisher, Jackson Randall, Gavin Gay, Ethan Jaurequi, Olivia Thomas, Kalea Pace, Nathan Fasalo, Seth Holmes, Brittany Upchurch, Wyatt Dawkins, Bristol Nesbit, Cameron Goble, Riley Helms, Angelina Erdmann, Reagan Lurix and Victoria Thompson.

Monroe Middle: Coach Johnny Sowell reached 400 career wins on Jan. 11 with the Redhawks win over Union Academy.

Cabarrus

Covenant Classical: Eighth-grader Kirby Thigpen won the Cabarrus County Scripps Spelling Bee and will advance to the Regional Scripps Spelling Bee. Covenant Classical third-grader Parker Rose placed second and sixth-grader Sarah Douglass placed fourth.

New principal: Superintendent Barry Shepherd has announced the appointment of Sandy Ward as the new principal of R. Brown McAllister. Ward will move from her position as assistant principal of instruction at A.T. Allen Elementary. She has worked at CCS since 2007.

Spelling bee: Harrisburg Elementary fifth-grader Donovan Nickol is the 2013 Cabarrus County Schools Spelling Bee Champion. The runner-up is Joy Jackson, a sixth-grader at Harris Road Middle. Spelling champions from CCS elementary and middle schools competed at the event. Donovan advances to the Charlotte Observer’s Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 11.

C.C. Griffin Middle: The school recently held a Curriculum Crawl for parents and community members.

Students showcased highlights of their skills with a technology scavenger hunt using QR codes, information stations that illustrated electronic resources available to the public and vertically oriented curriculum displays.

Royal Oaks Elementary: The school hosted a Math Curriculum Night on Jan. 8 at Food Lion and Dairy Queen. Teachers and staff led students and parents in math activities.

Northwest Cabarrus High: Senior Lucille Zhuang has earned three perfect scores on SAT tests. On the math portion of the regular SAT, Lucille has earned 800 twice. On the math subject area test of the SAT, she has also earned a perfect score of 800. Lucille is also a talented artist.

York

Larne Elementary: Fourth-grader Shannon Quinn won the 125 Christmases in Clover poster contest from entries submitted from Clover School District schools.

Clover Middle: As part of the annual Dickens Festival, seventh-graders recently demonstrated life in England during the Industrial Revolution with Victorian crafts, games, food and period attire. The students had recently read “A Christmas Carol.”

Clover High: Fashion, fabric and design students recently presented a fashion show featuring their design and construction skills. One student will later be chosen to represent the school at the S.C. State FCCLA Conference.
