ROCK HILL A friendly boxing match at the Rock Hill YMCA took a serious turn when a blow to the face landed a teenage girl in the hospital Wednesday.

At about 8 p.m., police were sent to Piedmont Medical Center where they met with a 17-year-old girl with a gash to her upper lip, according to a Rock Hill Police report. The girl told an officer that she and a 17-year-old boy were “just playing around” and boxing in the old YMCA gym.

While sparring, the boy allegedly hit her in the face too hard so she hit him back, the report states. The teen said the boy then punched her hard in the face, cutting her lip.

The girl believes the hit was intentionally aggressive and not due to “roughhousing or accident,” the report states. Hospital staff told police the girl’s injury would require stitches.

Police are preparing a third-degree assault and battery warrant for the boy.
