Two days after the presidential inauguration, Heather England’s third-grade class at Smithfield Elementary got to celebrate their own election success Wednesday.
The class won the national “If We Were President” contest, sponsored by Pearson and WeAreTeachers. The class and teacher received a grand-prize package that included a classroom Inauguration Day party, a $500 gift certificate from Pearson and an iPad 2.
The third-graders got the highest number of votes from the public for their election song “Vote Me Maybe,” which they performed on “Charlotte Today.” Their teacher had them form four committees -- wardrobe, technology, songwriters and props -- and the students practiced and performed the song with choreographed moves.
