North Mecklenburg High

Magnet Lottery: The Magnet Lottery for students who wish to apply for the International Baccalaureate Program at North Mecklenburg High School continues through Feb. 11. An information session for parents and students interested in the program will be held 7-8 p.m. Feb. 7 in theauditorium, 11201 Old Statesville Road, Huntersville. A session for students and parents who have entered the lottery will be held 7-8 a.m. Feb. 13 in the Student Services/Guidance office. Interested students may also make an appointment to shadow an International Baccalaureate student and visit classes at North Mecklenburg 7:15-10 a.m. Jan. 31. Appointments must be made by Jan. 30. Vance High

Art winner: Vance High School 11th-grader Bre Anna Washington won first prize in the art division of the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Art and Writing Contest held Jan. 17 at West Charlotte High School. The theme of this year’s contest was “Live it, Share it, Extend it: The Dream of a Global Community.” Washington received a $500 scholarship from Food Lion, was invited to be a part of Charlotte’s Martin Luther King Jr. Parade on Jan. 19 and was recognized at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast held Jan. 21.

Bailey Middle

Book Buy Back Program: Customers who buy books at the Bailey school store can return them in good condition and receive Bronco Buy Back Bucks worth $3 to spend at the Bailey Spirit Store. The Spirit Store will soon have available aT-shirt with the new Bailey Bronco on it. Next school year, discounted copies of many textbooks and first semester novels will be available in the store

Girls on the Run: Online registration runs through Feb. 8 for the schoolGirls on the Run team. The 10-week program focuses on building self-esteem and improving emotional and physical health. Participants will train together to walk or run in a 5k event. The team will meet 7-8:30 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays Feb. 19-May 4 in room A5.www.gotrcharlotte.org.

Cornelius Elementary

Writing award: Second-grader Mitchell King won first prize in the writing category of the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Art and Writing Contest held Jan. 17 at West Charlotte High School. Nearly 200 students from area elementary, middle and high schools participated. Mitchell received a $100 scholarship from Food Lion, was invited to be a part of Charlotte’s Martin Luther King Jr. Parade on Jan. 19 and was recognized at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast held Jan. 21 in the Crown Ballroom of the Charlotte Convention Center.
