Betsy Flagler: New standouts in the baby-product market

Baby skin care, baby sleep safety, baby travel – all bases are covered in the ever-booming, mind-boggling baby-product market. As a parenting columnist, I receive dozens of news releases about products for infants and young kids. Here are some of the latest that caught my attention:

• For air travel, consider the Baby B’Air Flight Vest (around $35). This product helps keep baby secure in her parent’s lap during the cruise portion of the flight, which is when 90 percent of injuries occur, according to the company. (While the Baby B’Air is approved by the FAA for cruising, current regulations prohibit the use of any child-restraint devices other than approved car seats during takeoff, landing and taxiing.) The Baby B’Air is used by connecting the baby’s vest to the adult passenger’s seat belt. It allows the baby to be held, fed or changed while remaining secure, and frees up the parent’s hands for reading or eating.

• For car comfort, Snugli is introducing improved “temperature management technology” to its car seats. Skin temperature plays a vital role in keeping children comfortable in the car, Snugli says. The new technology can absorb and store excess heat, keep the child at a balanced temperature, prevent chilling during the cooler months and reduce perspiration so the child stays drier. For older siblings, car-pooling can be a bit easier with Snugli’s BubbleBum – the first inflatable car booster seat (around $40).

• For sun protection, there’s a new entry in the stroller sunshade market called the SnoozeShade Plus (around $50). There’s a window for baby to see out, and when it’s naptime, you can close the outer blackout panel to create a cozy environment to help baby nap. The shade blocks out nearly all ultraviolet rays, while the little lookout window blocks 80 percent of UV rays.

• For documenting your baby’s milestones, try this alternative to the traditional baby book. A child’s firsts can be showcased infographics in StrangeBirdy Studios’ Milestones Poster ($40). At 20 inches by 30 inches, it’s billed as an “interactive infographic” for parents to record their child’s development and display on the nursery wall. The poster is bordered by growth rulers to track baby’s height and weight, and features colorful graphics and charts to write in. Included are 100 fabric stickers for parents to spell out the child’s name, document his or her hair at different stages of growth and record details such as food preferences.
