ROCK HILL, S.C. – In a 7-0 vote Monday night, the Rock Hill School Board approved spending $2.38 million over the next three years on school safety.
The plan does not address the hiring of any extra personnel. Instead, it focuses on crisis training for current staff members.
The majority of the funding will go towards upgrading or adding security measures to school buildings. The plan calls for buzzers, locks, secondary doors and additional locks. It also lays out complete structural alterations to better control access at three middle and seven elementary schools.
More than $500,000 is set aside for security camera installations or upgrades both inside and outside school buildings, as well as on school buses.
Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody said a great deal of time will also be spent making sure staff knows how to use -- and consistently uses -- security measures already in place.
The district plan is in response to an audit done last year. Rock Hill received the audit report December 13, 2012 -- the day before the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre.
