NEW ORLEANS San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh was asked if it was weird to be in the same city as his brother and not have plans to see him.
Harbaugh explained that he was getting together with John, Baltimores coach, Friday at a league-sponsored press conference. Welcome to the intimate, yet strange HarBowl Week.
Its not that it would be weird to have lunch or coffee with my brother this week, Jim Harbaugh said. We both are in charge of our duties and doing our jobs and I think thats what were most focused on.
Both Harbaughs were asked several odd questions Tuesday at Media Day. Jim Harbaugh was funny without trying to be, like when a reporter encouraged him to respond to a series of questions in the form of Twitter hash tags.
Im not a Tweeter. I dont have Tweeter, Harbaugh informed him. Are you making sport of me right now?
FRIEND OF DAVE: Former New York Giants center Shaun OHara is a fan of new Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman. When he was the Giants pro personnel director, Gettleman encouraged New York to sign OHara as a free agent.
I like him. Hes a Bostonian guy, so you can bust chops with him a little bit give and take, said OHara, an NFL Network analyst. I enjoyed working with him. I think hell be successful. He was always one of those guys, I could ask him a question about any player and hes got a great mind. Hed say, Heres what I like, heres what I dont like.
JUST A BIT OUTSIDE: Niners kicker David Akers got a little testy Tuesday on the subject of his waywardness. Akers has missed an NFL-high 14 field goals this season a year after making a league-record 44 attempts.
Akers said if hed been kicking through the wider goal posts used by high schools, he would have made every field goal except for the three that were blocked.
An inch is a mile in this game. Were not off by much, Akers said. Were doing great in practice. Were doing great in pregame. Its just one of those things where if I had the answer, I would have tried to fix it a long time ago.
Akers, who played in a Super Bowl with Philadelphia eight years ago, equated a placekickers role to a closers in baseball.
Theres no gray area, Akers said. Its either good or its bad.
RING IS THE THING: San Francisco center Jonathan Goodwin is back in the city where he played five seasons and won a Super Bowl with the Saints in 2009. But his Super Bowl ring didnt make the trip.
Its locked up in South Carolina, said Goodwin, who grew up in Columbia and played at Michigan. Last year when I first got to San Francisco, a couple of guys got to see it, but it has been in South Carolina. Hopefully I can pull it out with another ring in a couple of months.
Its something I take a lot of pride in but at the same time it feels weird being on another team with another teams logo on it.
Goodwin, 34, signed with the Niners after visiting with Jim Harbaugh after the lockout two years ago. Hes excited to be back in New Orleans.
Its definitely a place I want to come back and visit often, Goodwin said. To be able to go in the Superdome where I already have a lot great memories and a chance to make another great memory, is something I would always cherish.
