Authorities said the 23-year-old man killed early Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 85 jumped off a bridge to his death.

The incident happened around noon, on southbound I-85 near the Tuckaseegee Road overpass. The N.C. Department of Transportation reported “a jumper” had caused all southbound lanes to be closed. The interstate had reopened by 2 p.m.

At 12:15 p.m., troopers were able to open one southbound lane. A shoe could be seen in the southbound lane near the bridge, with the victim’s body about 40 feet away. Pieces of a vehicle could be seen nearby on the roadway.

Traffic is badly snarled in the area, and motorists should consider finding an alternate route.
