Burned teens’ fund raiser rescheduled

MOUNT PLEASANT -- An event to raise money to help pay the medical bills of three Cabarrus County teens burned in a January bonfire has been rescheduled.

The fund raiser will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Feb. 8 at Mount Pleasant High School. Cases of Sun Drop beverages will be sold for $14, with proceeds going to the families of the students -- Kendall Bolton, Nathan Honeycutt, and Kris Holland.

The sale had been scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed due to the threat of severe weather.

The three students, each a 16-year-old junior at Mount Pleasant, were burned when an aluminum can exploded inside a container at a Jan. 19 bonfire being held by a group of teens. The Cabarrus County Fire Marshal’s Office says the exploding can spread diesel fuel that a man had dumped into the barrel.

The injured students needed treatment at a burn center in Chapel Hill, but all three have returned home.
