FORT MILL The Fort Mill man who police say stole boat batteries, among other equipment, from a storage facility is in jail after the theft was caught on the business owner’s security cameras.
Jonathan Griffin, 21, is charged with four counts of petty larceny and three counts of larceny/breaking into a motor vehicle, according to York County Detention Center booking information. By Saturday afternoon, he was held without bond.
Jody Stegall, the owner of Fort Mill Storage off S.C. 160, reported that someone stole chains, tow straps and three boat batteries from his business, according to a York County Sheriff’s report. Police used security cameras that cover all six acres of Stegall’s facility before arresting Griffin.
The cameras helped police obtain a description of a truck, as well as a partial view of his face. They also lifted fingerprints from the boats targeted, the report states.
“The police were very efficient,” Stegall said on Saturday. “We were able to get a good view of the vehicle. We were lucky enough that we got a fingerprint.”
Stegall said he’s informed customers about the thefts, asking them to inspect their boats for signs of foul play.
“Just a couple of people have been able to look at their boats,” he said.
