The McMillan Greenhouses at UNC Charlotte have been restored after a fire in April last year destroyed plants in one of eight rooms.
With the improvements completed, a Greenhouse Open House & Orchid Celebration is planned, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 9201 University City Blvd. No parking permits are needed on weekends.
Visitors will be invited to tour a newly planted conservatory and see a new “Orchid Grove” display. Free presentations on growing orchids are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The open house will coincide with the greenhouse’s annual Valentine’s Orchid Sale through Feb. 14. Sale hours are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday through Feb. 14 and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Instead of roses for Valentine’s Day, choose blooming orchids for $15 to $40. Blooming cyclamen and a few succulent plants also will be on sale for $5 to $15.
The greenhouse staff and orchid experts will be on hand during the open house to answer questions about orchids, point out special plants, and help shoppers choose an orchid to buy and take home. For information, call 704-687-0721.
