Providence Day boys’ basketball player Bryon Fields scored his 1,000th career point last week.
The 5-foot-10 senior, who plans to go to Duke on a football scholarship next year, scored the point in a Jan. 29 game against Charlotte Christian. Fields has averaged close to 14 points in his varsity career and is averaging 16 points per game this season. He missed nearly half of last season with a wrist injury. “Bryon is one of the toughest and most competitive players to ever wear a Charger uniform,” head coach Brian Field said in a release. “His leadership and unwavering effort have been invaluable to the team’s success this season.” Fields is the second Providence Day boys’ basketball player to score his 1,000th point this year. Junior Davidson recruit Jordan Watkins passed the mark in January. Providence Day girls’ basketball player Jatarie White, a junior, scored her 1,000th career point in December.Lochbihler to International BowlCharlotte Catholic senior kicker Mitch Lochbihler was named to the U.S. Under-18 National Football team roster. Lochbihler (6-foot-6, 235 pounds) is one of 43 players that will represent the country at the Feb. 6 International Bowl in Austin, Texas. The U18 team will face team Canada at 8:30 p.m.Middle school swimming Charlotte Latin won the Greater Charlotte Middle School Athletic Association boys’ and girls’ conference met Jan. 31 at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. The boys’ team finished with a score of 192, beating second place Cannon by 27 points. The girls’ team scored 191 points to beat second-place Charlotte Country Day by 17 points.The Hawks also broke seven conference records at the meet.State indoor track meetSeveral south Charlotte runners travel to Winston-Salem Feb. 9 for the boys’ and girls’ indoor track state championships at JDL Fast Track. Here are some of the 4A runners to watch going into the championship meet: Boys:• Wyatt Maxey, Providence High: Has third best two-mile time in state this indoor season (9:39.40).• Kwayme Donyinah, Myers Park: Outdoor state champion hopes to win indoor 500-meter.• Matthew Mullins, Ardrey Kell: Sprinter has 10th-best state qualifying time in 55-meter dash (6.54).• Kaylan Love-Soles, Rocky River: Has 5th-best 300-meter time going into states (35.54). Girls:• Bianca Bishop, Providence High: Best state-qualifying time in two-mile so far (11:20.47).• Gina Daniel, Providence High: Among state’s best in 500-meter (1:19.50).• Grace Sullivan, Providence High: 6th-best time in the mile (5:23.41).• Anna McElrath, Independence: Patriot has top-eight times in 1,000- and 1,600-meter runs.• Sydney Blue, Ardrey Kell: Has fifth-best state qualifying jump at 5-foot-4.Charlotte Catholic will have several runners at the 1A/2A/3A indoor meet.
