Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say this man, Donald Sherman, was charged with vehicle break-in last week in southeast Charlotte. They say the vehicle owner captured Sherman and held him until police arrived. (Charlotte-Mecklenburg police photo.)

A man who spotted someone breaking into his vehicle in south Charlotte’s Blakeney area is credited with catching the suspect and holding him until police arrived, authorities say.

Police say officers were called about 10:30 p.m. Friday to the 1200 block of Bay Tree Way, off Rea Road south of Ballantyne Commons Parkway, concerning a vehicle break-in.

According to officers, the victim said he saw a man breaking into his vehicle and tried to stop him, but the man ran off. The owner of the vehicle said he chased the man across the street and caught him, holding him until officers arrived.

The suspect was identified by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police as 29-year-old Donald Geoffrey Sherman, and they say he has a lengthy arrest record. Sherman was charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle, and with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police ask that anyone with additional information about the suspect contact Crime Stoppers, at 704-334-1600 or online.
