Traffic conditions are back to normal at mid-morning Thursday on East Independence Boulevard and Monroe Road, after a very bad commute.

The problem began about 7:45 a.m., when debris -- possibly from a passing truck -- fell on inbound Independence Boulevard near the Pecan Avenue bridge. The debris blocked two inbound lanes.

Those two lanes remained closed until about 9 a.m., when a truck arrived and cleared the debris.

At one point during the morning commute, traffic was backed up beyond Sardis Road North, into Matthews. That was about 8 miles.

Many motorists got onto Monroe Road as an alternate, but that also became badly snarled for several miles.

Adding to the problem was a multi-vehicle wreck on Providence Road at Pineville-Matthews Road. The motorists who tried using Providence Road as an inbound route ran into delays there.
