Queens pianists advance to U.S. finals

Sixteen-year-old pianists Clara Gerdes and Hannah Wang, who study with Paul Nitsch at the Queens University of Charlotte Music Academy, finished first in the nine-state Southeast Division of the Music Teachers National Association Senior Piano Duet category competition on Jan. 20. They advanced to the national finals in March in Anaheim, Calif.

Clara and Hannah, who were among five duos in the regionals, are both juniors. Clara, who is home-schooled, lives in Davidson. Hannah attends Myers Park High.

The duo performed two pieces: “Sonata for Piano Four Hands” by Paul Hindemith, and the “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” overture by Mendelssohn. Both will play those two works again, against six other duos, in the finals.
