Former NC high school student shot, killed

Authorities say a former McDowell High School student was shot and killed and a current student was wounded in what investigators describe as a double shooting.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that the sheriff's office said 18-year-old Daniel De Jesus Umana-Escobar was dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the torso. He was a senior at McDowell High before dropping out of school last week.

Sheriff's Capt. Shanon Smith said 16-year-old Abraham Isai Valdez was transported to Mission Hospital with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head. He's a junior at the high school.

Investigators said the boys were found Tuesday evening by a nearby resident who was riding an ATV.

Smith said investigators are still trying to determine a motive and are interviewing family members.
