NEWTON -- A Conover man was convicted Thursday of sex offenses involving a child and was sentenced to at least 25 years in prison, officials in Catawba County say.

Robert Christopher Poynter, 46, was convicted in Catawba County Superior Court. Judge Timothy Kincaid sentenced Poynter to between 25 years and 30 years and nine months in state prison.

Prosecutors say the offenses occurred in August 2004 in Conover. Poynter was convicted on two counts of felony statutory sex offense and two counts of felony indecent liberties with a child.
