Streets are wet, and Charlotte-area drivers are responding by crashing into one another Monday morning.
A growing number of wrecks is causing backups on several of the regions most heavily traveled roadways.
The worst problem is on inbound East Independence Boulevard. A collision around 6:50 a.m. near the Pecan Avenue bridge has snarled traffic back to Sharon Amity Road. And now there is another wreck near Briar Creek Road.
Traffic is snarled for 8 miles.
But there are problems on several other roads.

I-77 northbound, south Charlotte ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph from Carowinds Boulevard to Woodlawn Road.
I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph from the lake down to I-485.
I-85 southbound, Cabarrus County ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-30 mph from Poplar Tent Road down to I-485.
I-77 northbound, north Charlotte ... Car fire near Sunset Road; traffic moving 25-30 mph from uptown to the fire scene.
Johnston Oehler Road at Mallard Creek Road ... Collision reported about 6:50 a.m.; moderate delays near Mallard Creek High School and Countryside Montessori High School.
Harris Boulevard at North Tryon Street ... Hit-and-run crash; minor delays.
Woodlawn Road at South Tryon Street ... Collision; moderate delays.
