Dee Gardner is retiring March 1 as principal of Piedmont IB Middle School, one of Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s most popular and highest-performing magnet schools.
Gardner has been at Piedmont for 25 years, the last eight as principal. That’s a relatively long tenure in a district that has frequently reassigned principals in recent years.
Piedmont, on the northeast edge of uptown Charlotte, offers an International Baccalaureate magnet program to students from the northern half of Mecklenburg County. Last year 96 percent of Piedmont students passed state reading, math and science exams. Ann Doss Helms
