Two of a Kind

The semester Nikki Roberti began at Appalachian State University, Addison Miller was out of school with an injury. But his friends instantly liked Nikki because she reminded them of him, and so they took her under their wings that fall. On the day the couple finally met, one of Addison’s friends was teasing Nikki. Addison walked into the room saying, “Don’t feel bad, they tease me for the same thing.”

It was an instant connection for the pair, who share a love for playful fun. So when Addison decided to propose, he concocted an elaborate scavenger hunt, having friends drive her around town to special spots—even the apartment where they’d shared their first kiss. He proposed at the final destination, a gazebo on campus that they’d always called “their spot.” With a rose and ring in hand, and friends hiding until they could wish their congratulations, the Addison asked and Nikki said yes.

For their special day, the pair wanted something equally playful and romantic. They chose Castle McCulloch just outside Greensboro as their destination. At the venue’s Hillside Terrace, Nikki walked down the aisle in her Maggie Sottero gown, holding silk flowers she’d designed herself. For the reception in the Castle’s canopy-ceilinged Crystal Garden, Nikki got creative. She wanted yellow and purple colors with a vintage butterfly garden theme, and in order to achieve her look, much of the décor was DIY. “The whole event was very magical and whimsical,” says Nikki, who had to rent a U-Haul truck to transport all of the crafts and décor to the venue. “And definitely the result of a lot of hard work and glue guns.”
