LAKE WYLIE The Charlotte Woodcarvers Club is sponsoring its 30th annual Showcase of Woodcarvings this weekend, and Tom Kavanagh of Lake Wylie has his entries ready.
“This is my third year entering the show. I specialize in caricatures and have two cowboys, as well as a gambler” and two others to showcase this year, he said.
The theme is “Wild, Wild West” and more than 100 carvers from 10 Southeastern states will exhibit 500 to 600 carvings in competition for $1,800 in cash awards.
“The show is an actual competition with three categories being judged,” Kavanagh said.
“I am considered an intermediate, but there is also a beginner’s category and an open category. The open category is for the professionals, and they are very, very good.”
Showcase of Woodcarvings is being held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 16-17 at the Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road. There will be demonstrations and carvings for sale, as well as carving competitions, seminars, vendors and a raffle.
“It’s free to go, and the talent of the contestants is very impressive. The show is a great family outing,” Kavanagh said.
