YORK Residents who have city water service disconnected due to a delinquent water bill would have to pay the bill before getting their service restored, under a change approved by the York City Council.
Under the new procedure, any water bill not paid by 5 p.m. on the 20th day of the money will result in the service being disconnected. When the bill is paid, service will be restored, not before 8 a.m. on the following day, and a $25 administrative fee will be added to the bill.
City Manager Charles Helms said if the 20th falls on Friday or on the day before a holiday, the disconnection will take place on the next business day.
Helms customers have been allowed to call the city’s after-hours answering service when water is disconnected and a public works employee would reconnect the water for a $25 fee.
Helms said that in some cases, public works employees were making many visits to a home where a water bill had not been paid.
