United Way’s planned Valentine’s Day conclusion of its annual fund drive has been postponed until Feb. 20. Agency officials said they decided to reschedule so a “special guest” could be included in the finale.
The campaign was running $1 million behind a few months ago, but has closed that gap to $100,000, officials said. This year’s goal is $21.2 million, a 1.5 percent increase over what was raised the previous year. The agency reported last month that two major donors pledged to provide money at the finale, if the agency could close the gap.
United Way hopes to avoid taking money from an emergency fund created to keep charities operating in a community crisis. Last year, United Way needed $1.2 million from the fund to maintain level funding to 87 member charities. Mark Price
