Construction underway at old Charlotte coliseum site

The doors are propped because the line spills out. It is lunchtime at Lake Pointe Plaza along Yorkmont Road.

Building owner Tom Cluderay said the parking lot is slammed, and the plaza gets a great deal of walk up business from nearby areas.

“It’s really surprised us,” Cluderay noted. “(We’ve) been here about five years and its turned into the food court for several million square feet of office space within a pretty close radius.”

But that’s about to change.

The old Charlotte Coliseum off Tyvola Road came down with a whole lot of fanfare and a big boom in 2007.

And then .... nothing.

The building boom that had been well underway died with the economy.

The manager of the nearby driving range has been here the whole time.

“I’ve noticed the signs, really haven’t noticed much construction going on,” said Matt Ethridge.

Construction is finally underway at City Park. Almost 300 apartments are expected to be done by the end of the year.

The developer at City Park says some small retail shops are also in the works and he’s optimistic there are lots more to come.

“I think that’s great,” the developer said. “Originally when we bought this property there were some plans for something to happen at that time and it just kind of sat on the shelf for awhile.”

The idea is to make this a live-work community where people can walk to everything they need. There will also be parks and trails connecting to the nearby farmer’s market.
