Red Lobster employee shot during robbery

Matthews police Saturday were investigating a robbery at Red Lobster that left an employee in the hospital with a gunshot wound.

The robbery happened at 6 a.m., as three employees were meeting a delivery truck at the restaurant located at 9801 Independence Pointe Parkway, police said.

During the drop-off, two men wearing masks approached the parking lot and confronted the restaurant workers inside the store.

They stole an undisclosed amount of money and shot the Red Lobster manager in the leg, according to police and a restaurant spokesman.

The suspects left through the backdoor but police have not been able to determine which direction they headed after they left or whether they were on foot or driving.

Medic responded to the scene and transported the victim to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for treatment, originally describing the manager’s injuries as life-threatening.

But Mike Bernstein, spokesman for Darden Restaurants, which owns Red Lobster, said the manager was expected to be OK.

The restaurant opened for normal business hours following the shooting, Bernstein said.

Police are looking for two black men who were wearing black pants, shirts and masks.

If anyone has information to this crime they're asked to call Matthews police at 704-847-5555.
