Organizing Cookbooks & Recipes

I love to cook; therefore, I have no shortage of recipes and cookbooks. My recipes now span between virtual (Pinterest) to magazine cutouts to handwritten notes from my grandmother.

The question begs to be asked, “How are you to sort and organize your recipes?”

First let’s start with cookbooks.

Rip out your favorite recipes from the cookbook and donate the rest. Unless you really love an entire cookbook, there is no reason to keep the whole thing.

Alphabetize the remaining cookbooks.

Let’s move on to magazine and cookbook cutouts.

The easiest way to organize recipes ripped out of the newspaper or magazine is to place in a binder. I am all about binders for storing paper.

Use sheet protectors to store the bits of paper. It will keep everything together and clean. (I tend to splatter and make a mess when I cook.)

If you want to be a little neater about organizing these recipes, then cut the recipe and picture out. Tape or glue to a piece of white paper. Stuff that into the sheet protector.

About this recipe binder.

Binders can be purchased in a variety of sizes, colors, and styles. I started with a plain white Avery binder and am considering upgrading to a more stylish look. The Martha Stewart line at Staples is calling my name.

Use tab dividers to separate the binder by food group.

Chicken. Meat. Seafood. Breakfast. Drinks. Etc.

Use sheet protectors to store your favorite recipes within the binder. I double up on each sheet protector by storing one recipe in the front and another in the back.

To take it one step further, organize like with like within each section. For example: baked chicken dishes, mexican inspired dishes, crock pot recipes, and so on.

Make it easy on yourself when it is time to write out the weekly menu. Quickly flip through your favorite cookbooks and recipe binder for dinner ideas.

Don’t forget to throw away recipes that you never make or don’t really like. I trash a recipe if there are too many ingredients, too many steps, or too bland of a finale.
