Covenant Day senior wins oratory contest

Peter Saunders won Covenant Day School’s eighth annual H. Brent McKnight Justice and Mercy Oratory Contest on Feb. 4.

The contest, for seniors at the school, includes a $1,000 prize. Students are given a prompt and are required to write and deliver a speech on how justice and mercy are demonstrated in a current issue. Peter said his speech was "basically about how love manifests itself in justice, mercy and humility, with some specific anecdotes." An excerpt: "In true humility, we recalibrate our priorities to looking out for those around us, rather than looking out for ourselves. This is how we ought to love."

The contest was created in memory of Brent McKnight, a federal judge who served in North Carolina.
