A Charlotte man was charged with driving while impaired after a fatal crash on an icy portion of Tyvola Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police say they are taking into account all contributing factors to the crash, but 23-year-old Bairon Josue Sandoval is accused od driving drunk.
Tatiana Rivera, 20 was killed and two other people were injured, one seriously.
Police say around 3 a.m. Sandoval was driving the 2000 Nissan Frontier Truck westbound on Tyvola Road when he lost control near Interstate 77 and struck a tree. Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene. The other occupants of the truck were transported to Carolinas Medical Center.
In addition to DWI, Sandoval was charged with felony death by vehicle, felony serious injury by vehicle and with driving without an operators license.
He was in Mecklenburg jail under a $53,500 bond on Sunday. Immigration officials also suspect he is in the country illegally, which means he would remain in jail even if he posted bond.
Police say there were icy areas on that section of Tyvola Road early Sunday. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
