ROCK HILL A Rock Hill man landed in the emergency room at Piedmont Medical Center Friday after accidentally shooting himself while cleaning his gun.

The 47-year-old man told police his 9mm discharged while he was cleaning the weapon. The bullet went through his left heel and into the back door of his apartment, according to a Rock Hill police report.

Police went to the man's apartment to verify his story and found the gun on the table by his couch. They saw blood spatters on the carpet near the couch and a bullet hole in the door.

Officials say it is always best to check the chamber before cleaning a firearm to make sure it is unloaded.
