CHAPEL HILL Sam Smiley, a reserve defensive back at North Carolina, has been sentenced to a year of probation following his July arrest on a misdemeanor assault charge.
Smiley pled not guilty but was found guilty last week in Orange County court. He was sentenced to one year of unsupervised probation and ordered to pay $2,665.40 in restitution.
Chapel Hill police arrested Smiley on July 21, 2012, at 2:46 a.m. after a disturbance outside of a Franklin Street restaurant. He played in eight games for UNC during the fall and finished the season with 26 tackles. Andrew Carter
